Dénethor I va ser el desè senescal regent de Góndor, el poderós regne de la Terra Mitjana en la ficció literària de J.R.R. Tolkien. Dénethor és un nom sindarin que significa "vista d'àguila".

Va néixer l'any 2815 de la Tercera Edat, fill de Rian, la germana del senescal Dior. A la mort del seu oncle sense descendència el 2435 heredà el càrrec, en el que era el primer trencament de la línea masculina directa a dels sensescals de la Casa de Hurin.

Quan obtingué el poder el reialme es trobava en temps de pau (període conegut com "la pau vigilant"), però la tranquil·litat s'acabà el 2575 quan Ithílien va rebre l'atac sobtat dels ferotges Uruk-hai: una raça d' orcs que mai havia estat vista abans. Góndor perdé temporalment el control d'Ithílien, i molts dels seus habitants van morir o van haver de fugir-ne. L'antiga capital d'Osguíliath va quedar definitivament en runes després dels danys causats durant la batalla que hi tingué lloc.

Tingué tres fills: dues nenes i un nen, Bóromir, que el succeïria a la seva mort el 2477.
