Marco Simoncelli (Cattolica, Emília-Romanya, 20 de gener de 1987^[1] ‒ Circuit de Sepang, Malàisia, 23 d'octubre de 2011) va ser un pilot italià de motociclisme de velocitat, guanyador del Campionat del Món de 250cc amb Gilera l'any 2008.

Trajectòria

Nascut a Cattolica, visqué des de petit a Coriano. Aviat començà a competir en curses de minimotos i a triomfar en diverses competicions infantils i juvenils. Guanyà el Campionat d'Europa de 125cc l'any 2002, fent alhora sis participacions en proves del Campionat del Món de la mateixa cilindrada. L'any següent disputà el mundial sencer de 125cc, acabant en 21a posició final.

L'any 2004 continuà a 125cc on aconseguí la seva primera victòria al Gran Premi d'Espanya, disputat al Circuit de Jerez sota la pluja, victòria que repetiria, aquest cop sobre sec, l'any 2005.

El 2006 passà a 250cc amb l'equip Gilera, acabant l'any en 10a posició final, resultat que repetiria a la temporada següent. La seva primera victòria a la categoria de 250cc no arribaria fins l'any 2008 en què n'aconseguiria dues i s'alçaria amb el títol mundial de la categoria. La temporada de 2009 compaginà la seva participació als Grans Premis amb una aparició al Mundial de Superbikes, aconseguint-hi un tercer lloc en una de les dues curses celebrades a Itàlia, al Circuit d'Imola.

La temporada de 2010 fitxà per Honda per a disputar el Mundial en la categoria de MotoGP. En aquesta categoria va tenir dos seriosos incidents durant la temporada de 2011, amb pilots del màxim nivell: al Gran Premi de França, a Le Mans, xocà amb Dani Pedrosa i el féu caure, provocant-li una fractura de clavícula i tres Grans Premis més tard, al dels Països Baixos celebrat a Assen, avançà de forma molt irregular Jorge Lorenzo, fent-lo caure i impedint que el mallorquí pogués lluitar per les primeres posicions.

El 23 d'octubre de 2011, una caiguda al Gran Premi de Malàisia li provocà greus ferides que acabaren, pocs minuts després, amb la seva vida.^[2]^[3]^[4]
